Final Year Project
Senior Activity Hub : Activate

Project Activate aims to create a different kind of senior activity centre that breaks the rigidly structured implementation & sheltered environment of traditional ones. It will empower the seniors to start leading an active lifestyle not just in terms of sports and wellness but to be socially, financially & mentally active by giving them full autonomy, control & freedom.

Tools: Sketchup, Vray, Indesign, Illustrator, Photoshop

Timeframe: 4 months Oct 2017 - Feb  2018

Below are my extensive case study research documents.

Project Outcomes

Research Summary (In case u missed those with the skip button, I have summarized it as below)

A brief summary gathered from my research analysis above: The graph shows in 2030, the number of Singaporeans aged 65 and above is projected to double at an alarming figure of 900,000. Over the span of the last decade, the poverty rate of working elderly has increased by 28%.

Furthermore, with low birth rates, limited healthcare professionals and increase health care costs, such various reasons arise to the necessity of a new initiative called ‘ageing in place’.

Campaign ‘Ageing in place’ aims to build senior-friendly communities which encompasses social inclusion, lifelong employability & an active lifestyle, which will be addressed in my project scope.

Design Intent / Concept

The spatial design encourages active lifestyle and allow users to exercise their muscles by walking through the space daily without their realisation. The concept of active carries over to the form and material selection by being more dynamic, bold and energetic with the overall form and colour scheme.

The new form also took inspiration from the pitched roof of the warehouse, creating a sense of continuity between the past and present while embracing the philosophy of form follows function due to the warehouse’s industrial origins. Thus all the forms are purposefully created with functional and suggestive usage.

Key spaces of Activate includes the front façade, with the structural form itself suggesting the function as a stage for events or mass outdoors exercises.

Level 1 features a café that has a communal dining layout together with a communal kitchen which encourages elderly & the public to socialize over food and drinks. The café serves as an optional source of income for the elderly with senior-friendly environment and flexible schedule.

Level 2 has a user defined bookcase as the main feature of the activity space allowing personal customizations while cultivating a sense of social etiquette and shared responsibility when using a shared space.
